Asia is four times the size of Europe and home to more than 4.7 billion people or more than 60% of the world’s population. Two countries, India and China, account for more than 50% of the population of Asia.
There are 49 countries in Asia with 5 viewed as transcontinental, (Georgia, Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan and Turkey). The UN divides Asia into subdivisions for statistical purposes. These include North Asia, Central Asia, West Asia, South Asia and Southeast Asia. Climatic conditions can be very different across the regions.
Asia offers a wide range of activities for tourists. The budget minded might head to Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia while the high end might consider Japan, Singapore and South Korea. Adventure travel and ecotourism can be found in most countries.
In the pre-pandemic years, there were more than 120 million tourist arrivals annually to the 6 largest economies of southeast Asia (Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and the Philippines). It is expected to return to these numbers by 2025.
