International Health Regulations for Yellow Fever

International health regulations are enforced for yellow fever. It’s important to carry the correct documentation.

A real-life travel setback:

You have had a pleasant few days in Buenos Aires and are just about to board the plane for Nicaragua when you are asked to provide a valid yellow fever certificate.

You didn’t believe this was necessary as you had not traveled out of the capital, and you had certainly not traveled to the northern province of Misiones where there is a risk of yellow fever.

In the past, you had been vaccinated for yellow fever (2012) but unfortunately had misplaced your old certificate.

Vaccine Record vs. Official Certificate

While you were reassured that you didn’t need to update your past immunisation for any health risk prior to travel, you still decided to carry a record of having had the vaccine previously.

This was in a summary of vaccine records from the general practice.

Despite explaining the situation to the airline, you were NOT allowed to board the plane!

You were not carrying the correct documentation.

Nicaragua’s Yellow Fever Entry Requirement

Nicaragua clearly stipulates that it requires a yellow fever certificate from travellers, older than 1 year, arriving from a country which, according to WHO, is at risk for yellow fever transmission. See WHO Yellow Fever Requirements (November 2022)

The Corrientes and Misiones provinces are considered risk areas for yellow fever transmission, but Nicaragua does not specify areas, only the country of origin.

What an Official Yellow Fever Certificate looks like

A Positive Outcome – but a lesson learned

The above report is a true story. It ended well despite the initial setback. The traveler was able to have her previous yellow fever vaccination verified by the vaccination clinic, and a new copy of the certificate was provided. After much persuasion, the airline accepted the electronic copy.

I got to Nicaragua and it’s awesome!!! The beaches are beautiful, and the food is good, and the surf has been fun.
