Dr Bob Kass is one of Australia’s pioneers in the discipline of Travel Medicine and has served on the board of the International Society of Travel Medicine (ISTM) for three years. He has specialist qualifications in paediatrics and public health Medicine, and has vast international experience having worked overseas in public health, paediatrics and tropical medicine.
Personal experience in travel is fundamental to the practice of travel medicine. Over the years, Dr Bob has worked in Western Samoa, Fiji, Tokelau, Kiribati and Tonga in the Pacific, Uganda in Africa, and Nepal, India and Myanmar in South Asia. He has also worked as a paediatrician in Papua New Guinea and Central Australia.
As a travel medicine physician, Dr Bob has undertaken a few extreme treks including Kokoda, Mt Kilimanjaro, Annapurna and Mt Kinabalu. This extensive and diverse international experience allows him to offer invaluable insights in his clinical practice and at health briefings for intending overseas placements. In the past he was Medical Advisor to the Australian Youth Ambassador Program (AYAD), Australian Volunteers for International Development (AVID) and Engineers without Borders (EWB).
He maintains a special interest in medical education relating to vaccine preventable disease and tropical paediatrics. With no international travel possible during the COVID-19 pandemic, he organised COVID-19 vaccination centres in the southern suburbs of Adelaide with a particular focus on vaccine hesitant individuals. He continues to work in a clinical capacity providing expert travel medicine advice to world travellers.
